To be frank, the fediverse is not an ideal platform for discovering content, primarily due to its limited user base. So, what can we do to address this issue? Instead of relying on proprietary platforms, we should consider posting our content, microblogs, blogs, vlogs, and engaging in discussions on the Fediverse. Nonetheless, there are some challenges involved. For instance, I have been a devoted follower of Vsauce on YouTube for years, but as expected, he is not present on Odysee, Peertube, or any federated platform. Consequently, I cannot simply cease watching his videos for this reason alone. Ultimately, I have realized that it is acceptable to consume content on prominent surveillance-oriented tech services with basic tracking prevention measures. However, I believe that crossposting or using these Big-Tech platforms with an account is not advisable, as crossposting will just kill the originality of content. Although it is possible to consume content on proprietary platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit without an account, the same cannot be said for X, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, Discord, Snapchat, and others. Personally, the only proprietary social media platforms I utilize are YouTube and Telegram (which requires an account), and occasionally Reddit and Discord. However Fediverse platforms not having a good algorithm is probably good for your mental health. Social media was originally created to connect society. By posting videos (yt), photos (insta) and thoughts (x) onto our social media feeds, we can share whats going on in our lives. Also communities where people can dive into their interests, hobbies and passions (reddit).

But today, we will create our own algorithm instead of the usual chronological order in Firefish using Antennas.

Antennas Guides Read Order

Antennas were made on 22/12/2022

  1. https://blahaj.zone/notes/9b5uy76thd — explains how to create an antenna
  2. https://thefedi.wiki/firefish/user/antennas — explains how to personalize your antenna
  3. Its important to remember that your antenna will provide more content after 2–3 days; also keep updating your antenna with new keywords and "keyword " those keywords which are causing irrelevant posts.
  4. Your instance also matters ! For example, the same antenna on https://dvd.chat and https://iceshrimp.social will produce different content according to instances its federated with!
  • So you can include hashtags, and it will work like the “following hashtags” feature on Mastodon (this feature is also relatively new, merged on 17/07/2022), the only advantage is you can also keep track of post with just the keywords which the author forgot or didn’t intended to associate with a #.
  • Conclusion : Also use #s whenever possible in your Mastodon posts. So that software like Firefish doesn’t get clear advantage in discovering micro-blogged content on the fediverse.
  • The Antenna feature makes you feel that you are in control of your feed, and you can create multiple feeds too !
